6th World Hydrogen Technologies Convention (WHTC) in Sydney, 11th-14th October 2015

On 11th-14th October 2015 the 6th World Hydrogen Technologies Convention (WHTC) was held in Sydney, Australia. Over the four days at the Australia Technology Park over 120 presentations were given by speakers on the topics of “Hydrogen Production and Storage”, “Fuel Cells”, “Modelling”, “Distributed Energy”, “Bio-Hydrogen”, “Hydrogen Refuelling Stations” and “Policy and Safety”.

The BHC participated with three speakers and presentations:Norbert Heublein, M.Sc. from the Chair of Thermodynamics of Technische Universität München on the topic of “Chemical Hydrogen Storage in OrganicLiquids Using a System Based on the Concept of Two-Phasic Hydrogenation”, Dipl.-Ing. Christoph Müller Philipps Sohn from the Institute of Engineering Thermodynamics (LTT) of FAU Erlangen on the topic of “Waste Heat Recovery on a Small Hydrogen Combined Heat and Power Generation Unit” and Dipl.-Ing. Moritz Schumacher, also from LTT, on the topic of “Experimental Study on an Engine with Low Pressure Hydrogen Direct Injection”. The concept of hydrogen storage in LOHCs was met with great response especially in contrast to the common high pressure storage systems, and power generation out of hydrogen by internal combustion engine represented a feasible alternative to fuel cells.

One of the highlights of the convention was the commercial launch for the Australian market and unveiling of one of the first commercially available hydrogen cars by the Toyota Motor Corporation. The so called “Mirai” was enthusiastically introduced by Taiyo Kawai and was well received by the audience.Animated discussions unfolded around the car and the following reception offered the possibility to get in contact with the international hydrogen community.

10th October 2015: FAU hosts LOHC Energy Technology Cluster session from Bayern Innovativ

The Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg and Bavarian Hydrogen Center hosted an Energy Technology Cluster session from Bayern Innovativ on the topic “LOHC – Energy Storage by means of Liquid Organic Hydrogen Carriers” on October 10th 2015 in Erlangen. Bayern Innovativ plays an active role in Bavaria’s Cluster Strategy to further the cooperation between science and industry. The “LOHC” session included almost 50 participants, primarily from outside the university. The program organised by Dr. Manfred Fenzl, Cluster Energy Technology Management, included presentations from Bavarian Hydrogen Center professors Prof. Eberhard Schlücker and Prof. Jürgen Karl. Dr. Daniel Teichmann gave an update from the BHC spin-off company Hydrogenious Technologies GmbH and Erich Maurer, Director at Energieagentur Nordbayern GmbH, discussed decentralised heating networks. The session was rounded-off with a comparison of LOHC und alternative hydrogen storage systems presented by Patrick Adametz (Institute of Separation Science & Technology, FAU), member of the System Analysis BHC project team. A demonstration of the dehydrogenation and hydrogenation BHC lab-rigs at the university completed the meeting.

28th-29th July 2015 | 4th BHC-Symposium at Kloster Waldsassen

LogosJoint Symposium with Cluster of Excellence EAM Catalytic Materials

In July 2015 the 4th Bavarian Hydrogen Center Symposium took place at the historic and impressive monastery of Waldsassen (Kloster Waldsassen). The monastery of Waldsassen was awarded the Bavarian Founder Prize in the Special Award category in 2014 (Bayerischen Gründerpreis). For the first time this annual BHC-Symposium was held as a joint event together with the Research Area D “Catalytic Materials” from the Cluster of Excellence EAM at the FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg.

The program included a mix of internal presentations from each of the BHC project groups (generation, storage and utilization of renewable hydrogen), a selection of EAM Research Area D topics and a poster session with a flash-presentation from each of the young researchers. There were also various workshops to allow exchange of ideas and discussion of future plans. EAM Professor Julien Bachmann delivered the opening lecture on the subject of electrochemical energy conversion.

The BHC was proud to be able to include 3 guest speakers from industry, namely Dr. Michael Weinhold (Energy Management Division, Siemens AG), Dr.-Ing. Daniel Teichmann (Hydrogenious Technologies GmbH) and Dr.-Ing. Christian Bergins (Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems Europe GmbH). A tour of the renovated monestery with its world-famous 18th century library added interesting variety to the program!

15th–19th March 2015 | BHC at ACHEMA Trade-Fair

World Forum and Leading Show for the Process Industries

The Cluster of Excellence Engineering of Advanced Materials “EAM” from the FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg, the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering (CBI) and the Bavarian Hydrogen Center hosted a joint stand to present its research expertise at ACHEMA 2015, the leading trade show in Chemical Engineering, Biotechnology, Environmental Protection and adjacent sectors. The stand covered 60 m2 in hall 9.2 Research and Innovation.

One of the highlights at the stand was a didactical dehydrogenation demonstrator based on Liquid Organic Hydrogen Carrier “LOHC” technology. The prototype was developed for didactical purposes at the Institute of Chemical Reaction Engineering within the BHC and aims to bring the general public in touch with current hydrogen storage technology. In this system hydrogen which has been safely stored in liquid form (Loaded-LOHC), can released on demand by catalytic dehydrogenation. Patrick Preuster at CRT can be contacted for further enquiries regarding the status and future plans of the prototype.

Heatpipe Reformer Technology for hydrogen generation from biomass was also demonstrated at the stand by the Institute of Energy Process Engineering. Moreover BHC, CRT and EVT participated in the BMBF Science Rally for high school students which meant that daily numerous pupils visited our stand!

24th March 2015 | BHC External Advisory Board Meeting

The second External Advisory Board meeting of the Bavarian Hydrogen Center took place at the FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg on the 24th of March 2015. The BHC-Steering Committee discussed the progress and future plans of the BHC together with the five external members from industry and the Head of the Economic Section of the City of Nuremberg. The event with the moto “BHC-Hardware” kicked-off at the Institute of Energy Process Engineering (Prof. Karl) in Nuremberg and was followed by a demonstration at the Institute of Engineering Thermodynamics (Prof. Wensing) also in Nuremberg. The board then travelled to Erlangen and various test-rigs and results were presented. These included the Pressure Swing Adsorption set-up for the purification of gas mixtures from Prof. Kaspereit and the Demonstrator components including both the dehydrogenation and hydrogenation reactors from Prof. Wasserscheid, Prof. Arlt and Prof. Schlücker. The board commended the BHC on its progress and it was agreed that written comments on the Board’s opinions and advice shall be prepared and submitted to the ministry.
